The Tide by Clare Helen Welsh, illustrated by Ashling Lindsay, is a comfort book. The comfort of a beautiful day spent with family at the beach. The comfort of knowing your grandparent loves you very much. The tide of memory and the tide of the day. This book is in my hands right now. I couldn't turn it back into the library just yet. It's so lovely. In addition to it being a perfectly heartfelt way of understanding how our grandparents may start to forget things, it has such perfect illustrations. Each time I flip a page I find another detail I love. The first being the real sized bodies. The comfort of being able to be big while enjoying a hot summer day at the ocean tugs at me as much as anything. Tide pools and ice cream and sandcastles. Playing and forgiving.
